When God Manifests Himself: His Glory in the World

When we hear the word “glory,” we often think of bright lights, angelic singing, or something majestic and unreachable. And yes, God’s glory is majestic, but it is not only about a visual spectacle or a dazzling manifestation. The glory of God is, in essence, who God is.

The glory of God is the character of God made visible. It is the sum of all His attributes: His love, His justice, His wisdom, His power, His holiness, His patience, His grace… everything He is. His glory is not something He acquires or displays only occasionally; it is part of His eternal being.

A simple way to understand this is to think about the sun. The sun does not try to shine—it simply shines because that is its nature. In the same way, God does not need to strive to be glorious. He is glorious at all times. The sun is the radiance it gives off. God is the glory we come to know.

The Bible says:

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.” (Psalm 19:1, NLT)

This tells us that His glory is seen in what He has created. Everything that exists reflects, in some way, who He is. It is as if the universe were a work of art, and as we look at it, we can know something about the Artist who made it. While the work is still only an idea, it remains hidden in the heart of the painter, but once it is set on the canvas, everyone can see what was within him.

The Glory of God Manifested in Creation

The glory of God is not only something abstract or theoretical; it can be seen in what God has made. The apostle Paul explains it this way in Romans:

“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” (Romans 1:20, NLT)

In other words, God left His fingerprint on creation. Although we cannot see Him with our physical eyes, we can know much about Him by observing the world He made. His wisdom is seen in the design of every living being, His creativity in the beauty of nature, His power in the immensity of the universe.

It is interesting that when we try to describe what God is like, we use things we already know. We say that God is like the sun, giving light and warmth to the whole world. We say that His love is like an ocean, vast and immeasurable. We speak of His strength as a mountain that cannot be moved.

Why do we do this? Because God used creation as a reflection of Himself. Even though nothing in creation can fully represent Him, it gives us glimpses of what He is like. As Psalm 104:24 says:

“O Lord, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.” (Psalm 104:24, NLT)

The Glory of God Manifested in His Relationship with His People

God does not only reveal His glory in creation, but also through His relationship with people. From the very beginning, the Bible shows us that God wanted to reveal who He is through His dealings with His people.

One of the ways we get to know someone is through the relationship we have with that person. A child knows his father because he grows up with him, hears him, and watches how he acts in different situations. The same happens in a friendship: the more time we spend with someone, the more we understand their character.

This is what happened with the people of Israel. God walked with them throughout history, showing who He is.

“I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:33, NLT)

This covenant was more than a formality. It was God revealing Himself to His people in a close and personal way. In the history of Israel, we can see different aspects of His glory manifested:

  • In His guidance: When He brought them out of Egypt with power and signs, showing that He is a God who delivers and saves.

  • In His provision: When He gave them manna in the desert and water from the rock, showing that He is a God who cares and provides.

  • In His holiness: When He gave them the law, showing that He is a just and good God.

  • In His presence: When He dwelled among them in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

Every time God acted, His people came to know more about who He is. His glory was revealed in His love, His faithfulness, and His justice.

The Glory of God in Our Lives Today

God still desires to reveal His glory in our relationship with Him. Jesus said:

“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:16, NLT)

When we live in obedience, love, and faith, God makes Himself known to the world through us. Just as a child reflects his father, we reflect God when we live as He has called us to live.

Jesus is the greatest example of this, because He is the ultimate manifestation of the glory of God.

The Glory of God Revealed in Christ

The greatest and most perfect manifestation of the glory of God is found in Jesus Christ. While creation and the history of Israel give us glimpses of who God is, Jesus is the complete and exact image of His glory.

“The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God.” (Hebrews 1:3, NLT)

We can say that Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. It is like when a seal is pressed into hot wax and leaves its imprint. The Father is the seal, and the Son is the perfect imprint of the Father, for He and the Father are one.

Jesus Himself said:

“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!” (John 14:9, NLT)

Jesus revealed the glory of God in everything He did. In Him, we see clearly what God is like, because everything He did perfectly reflected His character:

  • In His teachings – Jesus showed us the mind of God. His words revealed the thoughts, the justice, and the will of the Father. He did not speak on His own, but spoke what the Father gave Him to say.

  • In His miracles – His works displayed the power and compassion of God. By healing the sick, setting the oppressed free, and raising the dead, Jesus showed that God is not indifferent to human suffering, but that He is a God of love and restoration.

  • On the cross – It was on the cross that the glory of God shone most profoundly. There, His justice and mercy came together. God did not ignore sin but judged it in Christ. At the same time, He revealed His love by giving His Son for us.

  • In His resurrection and ascension – Jesus conquered death and ascended to heaven, showing that He is supreme, sovereign, and holds all authority.

Christ in Us: The Glory of God in the Church

Humanity was created in the image of God to reflect His glory in a perfect creation. However, sin distorted that image and led us away from our original purpose. Even though we were designed to manifest His glory, we chose the path of corruption. But in Christ, restoration is possible. Through Him, we can once again walk in fellowship with God, reflecting His character and living as we were created to live.

Christ not only revealed the glory of God on earth, but now He lives in us. When the Holy Spirit transforms us, we are called to reflect that same glory of God to the world.

“So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” (2 Corinthians 3:18, NLT)

As children of God, our lives should reflect His glory. The more we know Jesus, the more we become like Him, and the more we reveal Him in our daily lives.

In Summary

The glory of God is His essence—the reflection of everything He is. It has been manifested in creation, in His relationship with His people, and supremely in Jesus Christ. He is the exact image of God, and through His life, death, and resurrection, He fully revealed the Father to us.

Now, as believers, we are called to reflect that glory to the world. When we live in obedience, love, and faith, we show who God is. Just as Christ perfectly reflected the Father, our lives should be a living testimony of His presence in us.

“Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.” (Colossians 1:27, NLT)

May we walk in this truth each day and allow His glory to shine through us.
